Unique urgent care model provides patient safety net, physician support
Denver, CO—AfterOurs, Inc. partners with physicians desiring seamless care for their patients 24/7, and establishes an affordable, fast middle-of-the-night alternative to emergency department care for people with non-life threatening conditions.
AfterOurs, located in physician practice offices, opens when the doctor’s office closes and closes when it reopens. Hours of operation are all night, weekends and holidays.
“To our knowledge, this is the first urgent care center to round out a 24/7 safety net of care for patients without competing against regular physician hours,” said David White, AfterOurs chairman of the board. “Most urgent care centers are open during regular office hours and into the evening, but don’t cover the critical late-night to 7 AM shift. They compete with physician practices while leaving the patient stuck with the emergency department alternative in the middle of the night.”
AfterOurs’ name signifies the physician partnership. “It means after ‘our practice’—ours— closes,” said CEO Jill Flateland. “It reinforces care given by regular doctors without getting into a turf war. We promptly forward treatment records to the regular physician, unlike many emergency department episodes where a patient has to inform the doctor.”
Insurance copays and treatment costs average about half those of an emergency department, making AfterOurs an economical alternative. Most patients are treated within an hour, versus the average of 3.2 hours nationwide according to a 2005 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
AfterOurs began as service designed to alleviate physicians of after hours, on-call responsibilities. “We wanted to direct patients somewhere other than a hospital emergency department for non-life threatening issues. AfterOurs was born,” said White. “Because we have a Medical Hotline as part of the center services, we also are offering the on-call service to Front Range physicians.”
Added Flateland, “Initially, we thought about calling it ‘AfterHours,’ but there were already too many entities with that name. After hours—actually about 3 AM—the name ‘AfterOurs’ hit me. It proved the perfect fit for our partnership with physicians.”
“Jill and I both feel that healthcare is too slow to change. We wanted to do something that would have an immediate impact both on patients and physicians. AfterOurs is our solution,” emphasized White.
AfterOurs, the first Front Range urgent care center operating all night, weekends and holidays— times when physician offices typically are closed—is located at 3655 E. 104th Ave. in Thornton. AfterOurs provides care for non-life threatening conditions at about a third the cost of a typical hospital emergency department (ED) visit. No appointment is required, and most patients are treated within an hour. The AfterOurs Medical Hotline is 303-861-7878.
